Shahada

(Profession of Faith)

What is Shahada?

The belief that "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God" is central to Islam. This phrase, written in Arabic, is often prominently featured in architecture and a range of objects, including the Qur'an, Islam's holy book of divine revelations. One becomes a Muslim by reciting this phrase with conviction.

What did it consist of?

The first pillar of Islam is the Shahada, or declaration of faith. A person must acknowledge that there is only one God, Allah, and declare that 'there is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God' three times before a witness. This is fundamental to Islam and marks entry into the Islamic faith.
