(Fasting)

What is  Sawn?

Sawn is the fourth pillar, it is based in "fasting" during Ramadan, a special month on the Islamic calendar. It teaches Muslims self-discipline, bringing them closer to Allah.

What do they  fast?

They fast because it is ordained in the Holy Qur'an, "The fast is an act of deep personal worship in which Muslims seek a richer perception of God".

Fasting is also an exercise in self-control whereby one's sensitivity is heightened to the sufferings of the poor.

What do they do in Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and is the holiest month because it is believed that in this month the Holy Quran was sent down from heaven "as a guide for men and women, a declaration of direction, and a means of salvation." In this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, symbolizing the renunciation of earthly pleasures and focusing on piety and devotion. At the end of the day, the fast is broken with a festive meal called iftar. Friends and families gather for festive meals and exchange gifts and special gifts are also given to the poor. Also, in this month most Muslims go to mosques and spend hours praying and praying apart from the 5 daily prayers they have to do.
